Past Life Astrology:
What Your Vedic Chart Can and Cannot Show

By Medha  ·  October 27, 2026  ·  6 min read

Many people who look up past lives are not looking for a story about being a sailor or a queen. They want to understand a pattern they keep repeating: a fear with no clear cause, a talent that came too easily, or a relationship that felt old from the first meeting. Vedic astrology, or Jyotish, has its own way of looking at this. It reads the birth chart for karma carried in from before this life. This guide explains which parts of the chart an astrologer checks, walks through an illustrative example, and is honest about what a chart cannot tell you.

Quick Answer

Past life astrology in the Vedic tradition reads your birth chart for karma you brought into this life, not for a biography of who you were. The main markers are Ketu (the south node of the Moon), which shows skills and attachments you already know well; the 12th house and its lord, which show endings, letting go and what lies behind you; the 5th and 9th houses, read as merit carried forward; Saturn, which shows debts and slow lessons; and the Atmakaraka, the planet that describes what your soul most wants to learn. An astrologer reads these together, using your exact birth date, time and place. The result is a description of patterns and lessons that you can test against your own life. No chart can prove a past life, and no honest reader will claim it does.

What Past Life Astrology Means in Vedic Astrology

In Jyotish, a birth chart is a map of the karma you arrive with. Some of it is prarabdha, the karma that has already begun to play out in this life and is hard to change. Some is still open and shaped by what you do. A "past life" reading in this tradition looks at the first kind: the habits, gifts, debts and attachments that seem to have been in place before you made any choices.

That is different from a past life story. A chart does not tell you a name, a country or a century. It tells you themes. If a reader gives you a vivid biography from your chart alone, they are adding something the chart does not contain.

The Five Markers a Vedic Astrologer Checks First

1. Ketu: sign, house and nakshatra

Rahu and Ketu are the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's. Ketu, the south node, is read as what you have already mastered and are ready to release. Ketu in the 10th house can describe someone who has held authority before and now finds ambition strangely hollow. Ketu in the 7th can describe a person who knows partnership deeply and is learning to stand alone. The nakshatra Ketu sits in adds detail. Our guide to Rahu and Ketu covers the axis in full.

2. The 12th house and its lord

The 12th house is the house of endings, sleep, solitude, foreign lands and moksha, release. Planets here, and the condition of the planet that rules this house, are read for what lies behind you and what you are still letting go of.

3. The 5th and 9th houses: merit carried forward

The 5th house is linked to purva punya, the merit of past actions, and the 9th house to dharma and fortune. A strong 5th or 9th house is often read as good karma arriving early: a talent, a teacher who appears at the right time, protection in difficult moments.

4. Saturn: debts and slow lessons

Saturn shows where life asks for patience and repayment. Its house can describe an area where effort is slow to bring results, but where steady work eventually builds something lasting. Reading Saturn this way is not about blame. It is about where the work is.

5. The Atmakaraka

In the Jaimini system, the planet with the highest degree in its sign is the Atmakaraka, the indicator of the soul. Its nature describes the main lesson of this life. A Moon Atmakaraka often points to lessons in emotional security and care; a Saturn Atmakaraka to lessons in duty and endurance.

Some astrologers also use the D60 divisional chart, which is traditionally linked to past karma. It changes every couple of minutes of birth time, so it is only meaningful with an accurately recorded time.

A Worked Example

This is an illustrative chart, not a client. Imagine a woman born with:

  • Ketu in the 4th house, in Ashwini nakshatra
  • the 12th house lord placed in the 9th house
  • Saturn in the 7th house
  • Venus as her Atmakaraka

A Vedic reader would put it together roughly like this. Ketu in the 4th suggests someone who has known home, land and family duty deeply, and who may feel oddly restless at home now; Ashwini adds a healer's instinct and a need to move fast. The 12th lord in the 9th links release with learning and travel, so she may find peace through study or time abroad. Saturn in the 7th suggests partnerships that ask for maturity and patience, with commitments that grow stronger over time. Venus as Atmakaraka makes love, beauty and fair exchange the main lesson. The summary is not "she was a nurse in a past life". It is closer to: "you arrive knowing how to care for others; this life asks you to receive care and to choose partners with patience".

Western South Node vs Vedic Ketu

If you have read Western astrology, you may know the South Node. It is the same point as Ketu. The difference is in how it is read. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac and usually a house system such as Placidus. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, about 24 degrees behind, and usually whole sign houses. So your South Node may be in a different sign and a different house in each system. Neither is wrong, but do not mix the two when you compare readings.

What You Need to Get This Right

Your birth date, time and place

The houses and the Atmakaraka depend on your exact birth time. Use the time on your birth certificate or hospital record. If you were born outside India, give the town and the local clock time; the astrologer converts it using the time zone and daylight saving rules in force on that date. Daylight saving is the most common source of a one hour error for people born in the US, UK, Canada and Australia.

If you do not know your birth time

Ketu's sign and nakshatra, Saturn's sign and the Atmakaraka can usually still be worked out from the date. The houses cannot. A Moon based reading can still describe themes, but the reader should tell you what is certain and what is a range.

Which ayanamsa

The ayanamsa is the correction between the two zodiacs. Most Indian astrologers use Lahiri, the standard adopted by the Indian government. Using a different one can move planets near a sign boundary into another sign, so it is worth asking which one your reader uses.

Two Ways to Ask the Same Question

Medha offers both approaches. A Vedic birth chart reading or a custom Vedic astrology reading uses your birth details and reads the markers above. Karmic Accounts is a past life tarot reading: it uses the cards instead of the chart, so it needs only your name and a short intention, with no birth details. If you do not know your birth time, the tarot route is often the better start. Our article on past life readings explains what a session covers, and past life regression vs reading explains how both differ from hypnosis.

Honest Limits

  • No chart can prove that a past life happened. Treat a reading as a mirror for patterns you can test against your own experience.
  • Be wary of anyone who says you carry a curse from a past life and then sells you a costly remedy. A good reading does not end with fear and a payment link.
  • If a pattern involves trauma, anxiety or grief that is affecting daily life, a therapist or doctor is the right first step. A reading can sit alongside that, not replace it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can astrology show past lives?

Vedic astrology reads the birth chart for karma carried into this life: patterns, gifts and lessons. It does not show names, places or dates from a past life, and it cannot prove that one happened.

Is Ketu always a sign of a past life?

Ketu is read as what you already know and are ready to release, so it is the main past life marker. It is always read with its house, sign, nakshatra and the rest of the chart, never alone.

Do I need my exact birth time?

For the houses and the Atmakaraka, yes. Without a birth time, an astrologer can still read Ketu's sign and nakshatra and Saturn's sign, but should tell you what is uncertain. A tarot based past life reading needs no birth details.

How is this different from past life regression?

Regression is a hypnosis session you experience yourself. Past life astrology is a reading of your birth chart done for you. One is an inner experience; the other is an interpretation of a map.

I live in the US, UK, Canada or Australia. Can I book from there?

Yes. Readings are delivered on WhatsApp, as a voice note or written report, or live if you prefer a call. Give your birth town and the local clock time, and the time zone is handled for you.

Can I see the price in my own currency?

Yes. The service pages show the all-in price in your currency, and Medha confirms the order and payment on WhatsApp before the reading.
